Genius,... (wip)

I've been wanting to draw this person for a very long time but finding the right image to immulate enough and make my own enough has been a little challenging.  Well here I am finally,..

There will be learning to be done here with the elderly textured skin and white mad hair.

Old Courthouse,... continued,...

More on this artifact from the past that is no more.  I need to find the information regarding what happened to this old exquist architectural beauty. It was covered in ornamental and finial designs and embedded with all sorts of symbolism, like many of this old structures were.  Todays architecture seriously lacks in that domain, but I understand and somewhat agree mostly that function should proceed al other aspects,.. but althought my mind sees the logic my heart aches for the loss.

So,..

Not to bad so far. I believe I have all my measurements in order and simply need to shade in the areas.

Old Courthouse

I have finally started on a project which has plauged my mind for a few years now,.. recently a colleague showed interest in one of my works and suggested I draw this very project.  Issues with time and challenges I am not sure to be ready for had kept me at bay, but now I am here,.. just off shore,.. cannons loaded and blowing it up, (if I don't mind saying so myself).
Here are some "in-progress" images,..

This is the Old Courthouse for Escambia County Alabama. It is long gone now, but there is still some stones, bricks and mortar deep underground below the present courthouse. Below I wanted to show the scale of this project.

.... my comeback,...

I've been away,.. I apologize for that. No excuses, no regrets,... just life took over for a little while. I had redirected my efforts in other venues but keep my interests the same,.. graphite to paper.

Since my last post (the pachyderm) I have developed some new projects.

Lazy Sunday Tiger {completed}

Finally done with this project,.. it took me a little longer than expected but often life gets in the way of what we would rather be doing with our lives.

Originally I had thought of making this a three part series of big cats but I may have changed my mind and moved onto a southern football duo, which would make  my next project a Pachyderm.

I did use frisket again. This time for the whiskers,.. otherwise my methods and techniques haved changed (or improved). There was no real challenge on this one except time.  I did want to make the head and paws as realistic as possible and I think I managed well for the head but not so well with the paws.

Hand and Nail, Trio,.... (FINAL) {updated}

Here it is, the final piece in this three part series.  My first in a series,.. I guess three is a good start.
The next few pics show a pregression,.. followed by some closeups.  I personally always like to see closeups of other artists works. In seeing the individual pencil marks usually will teach me something for my art.

Here are the closeups,...

The use of mechanical pencils (0.5  0.7  & 0.9mm) was paramount for the detail needed for these (well, at least at my skill level).  Although I have to admit the idea of graphite, coal, carbon or clay surrounded by a wood then sharpened and honed to the desirable shape is very pleasing,.. but maybe less practical.  I did a lot of blending with my fingers, which is not often recommended but really did give the results I wanted. I also used a sharp tipped tourtillon and blunted/crushed tip one.   The erasers were a kneading eraser, and a semi-hard vinyl Magic-Rub.

{for full disclosure I should admit that frisket was used for the nail,.. I thought it was the idea method to have the nail pop closer to reality}

Hand and Nail, Trio,... (2 of 3 completed).

On to the BIG nail now.  This small nail was interesting but I am less pleased with the out come as the medium nail,.. maybe because the hand is closed,.. maybe because the shadows are are less prominent,.. maybe because it is shoddy work and I know it.    Anyways - perhaps I can hide the lack of quality with the other two accompanying pieces,....

Here are some progressions,...

,... and a few close-ups,....

Although I can not explain why, I have always felt a desire to work in threes. However this is the first time I have done so in a linear fashion,... normally I work my theme in threes but I do it sporadically.  Why these,.. why now,.. who knows (read into it what you will).   Myself I belive it is due to the inclement weatherkeeping me inside and a spouse that is dire need of copious amounts of sleep following surgery (she's fine and recovering well,.. thank you).

Here is part two completed.

Hand and Nail {completed},...

Hand and Nail,.. a good steady, strong hand can build, create, mend or destroy.   Place a tool in it and it will do all of those things.   Here are a few closeups,...

 Completed phase one,.. I am working on making this part of a trio.  Odd ideas need to sometimes be worked through to the end.

I think I can say "I Nailed It!",...  :)
 (oh yeah, I said it)
